JICA-JAXA Forest Early Warning in the Tropic (JJ-FAST)

JJ-FAST is a web-based forest monitoring system, which consist of satellite system, ALOS-2 and a remote sensing software platform. Both Hardware and Software are built dedicatedly for monitoring the forest in the tropic areas. Satellite System named Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) have been orbiting the planet Earth; covering 78 counties. The satellite acquires PALSAR-2 data; which works during day and night. The advantage of having The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor aboard is that it could penetrate the cloud. Therefore, the satellite could acquire data on the ground regardless the rains during rainy season which happens frequently in the tropical areas.

Monitoring forest has never been this easy until we have found the JJ-FAST platform. For an example, we would go backward into the year 2022. It was when a tragic incident happened to the forest in September 2022 at The Phnom Ta Mao area. As illustrated in figure 1.0, the forest was being cut down by two private companies began in early September 2022. The loses of trees, the forest cover has changed. Therefore it was detected by the JJ-FAST platform. Giving this as an sample, the forest could be protected on time if we were to use this kind of monitoring platform/technology.

Since JJ-FAST is a web-based technology, and it was built for research purposes; the website requires more interactive in order to get into the area of our interests. Therefore, we have created a telegram channel so that those who are interested in receiving the latest map from JJ-FAST platform could obtain those map links in our telegram channel.

Currently we provide only one channel for Cambodia territory. We are working on adding specific area of interest for those who are working on the ground to protect our remaining forests.

We are welcome to non-profit organization and forest communities in Cambodia to request their own telegram channel so that they could receive forest cover change detection map link(s) specifically to their area of interests.
